A cowboy was a type of cattle herder typical of the Ancient West period of Earth. It was also a more general term referring to those living in the Ancient West, especially in the fiction genre known as Western.

In 2151, Malcolm Reed once speculated that Zefram Cochrane, as a Montana native, spent his nights reading "about cowboys and Indians". (ENT: "Shuttlepod One")

In 2372, after Commander Chakotay had left the USS Voyager to try to deal with Seska on his own, Captain Kathryn Janeway complained that he had "run off like some cowboy". (VOY: "Maneuvers")
