A man in a crow's nest
A crow's nest was located on the upper part of the main mast of a ship.
They were generally manned by a lookout who would hold binoculars and watch for any potential dangers ahead of the vessel.
In 1986, a whaling ship that was interested in George and Gracie had a crow's nest. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)
