Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Season 1 was released on VHS in the UK in a two-episode-per-tape format by CIC Video in 1993-1994.

CIC Video[]

From 1988 onward (starting with the The Next Generation rentals), the UK CIC Video releases had served as the template for all Star Trek tape releases in the rest of Europe, with local branches of CIC Video responsible for either subtitling or dubbing in the language of the target market, as well as optionally adapting sleeve cover art to local tastes. The Netherlands/Flanders video case sleeve cover art for example, was virtually indistinguishable from their UK counterparts, save for the ratings and text imprint language of the episode summaries/disclaimers on the back cover art, whereas some European countries, such as the Nordics, sometimes featured redesigned sleeve cover art.

Cover sleeves[]

CIC Video included stardates on its covers for each episode. These appeared even when no stardate was given in the episode. New for this series release was that CIC did away with the customary headshot stills from the episodes they had until then employed as sleeve cover art for their releases, and replaced them with especially commissioned thematic artistic cover art. The cover art for the newly by Peter Tishma[1] designed cover sleeves was created by illustrator Brian Bysouth[2], who would continue to do so for the rest of this VHS series and CIC Video's subsequent Deep Space Nine and The Next Generation DVD iterations. [2] [3] The spine featured a partial band that when a complete VHS season was lined up showed one long scene that featured planets, ships and the station, also created by Bysouth.

The back cover carried a quote from one of the episodes contained on the video. The plastic snapcase sleeve covers are double-printed with additional in-universe information printed on the backside, in this particular series case usually pertaining to one of the characters prominently featured in one of episodes as included on the tape in question, or as a contemporary collector had put it, "The detail inside was usually confined specifically to the featured stories which only gave away what might be involved. It was almost like a written trailer for the episodes." [4] The case sleeve of tape 1 is the exception as its backside features an introduction of the station and its ensemble of the main protagonists. This was an extra feature that CIC Video introduced as new format for this VHS release which it continued to utilize until its dissolution in 1999 not only for the remainder of this VHS series, but for the subsequent second The Original Series, Voyager, and their 1993-99 period Star Trek film VHS releases as well. The standard videotape snapcases were executed in transparant plastic in order to accommodate this new feature.

Footnotes[]

  1. Nikki Harper, "Watching Star Trek for a Living", Star Trek: The Official Fan Club of the UK Magazine issue 8, p. 11
  2. Bysouth's original VHS Vol. 1 Deep Space Nine art was sold for US$4,400 in Heritage Auctions' 2-3 December 2024 "Movie Posters Signature® Auction #7390" as Lot #86317. [1] Five of Bysouth's other VHS Deep Space Nine cover art originals were also offered up at the same auction as Lot #s 86313, 86314, 86315, 86316 and 86318, but went unsold.
  3. The video sleeve appears to render this episode's title as "Battlelines", although the small case font makes it difficult to tell for certain.
  4. In the case of sets, the certificate is over the set as a whole (unless stated otherwise).
  5. Copies were individually numbered, with at least 19,434 produced. Also contains a 16 page introductory color booklet to the series.
  6. This rating (provided by Amazon.co.uk) appears anomalous - all four pilot episodes individually are rated no higher than PG.
  7. A "bookend" release with "What You Leave Behind" and not released by CIC Video, but by Paramount Home Entertainment (PHE) after the dissolution of CIC Video in 1999. No in-universe information printed on the backside of the sleeve cover as PHE had dispensed with the practice after having taken over.
