Dark ages was a term describing periods of history in which a civilization was perceived to have regressed culturally and scientifically. On Earth, "the Dark Ages" usually referred to parts of the Middle Ages in Europe.

The violent rise of the Augments on Earth in the 1990s threatened to send humanity into a new dark ages. (TOS: "Space Seed")

Doctor Leonard McCoy denounced dialysis as something from the Dark Ages after being transported to San Francisco in 1986. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home).

In 2263 in the alternate reality, Leonard McCoy similarly described the medical instruments on the USS Franklin as being from the Dark Ages. (Star Trek Beyond)

In 2366, Captain Jean-Luc Picard protested that allowing the Mintakans to continue believing him to be a god would "send them back into the dark ages." (TNG: "Who Watches The Watchers")

Malcorian Chancellor Avel Durken believed that those of his people opposing the development of warp drive in 2367 were living in the dark ages. (TNG: "First Contact")

After seeing the technological achievements of the Federation in 2368, Hannah Bates lamented that she and the others of the Genome colony had been living in the dark ages. (TNG: "The Masterpiece Society")
