David Burroughs Mattingly (born 29 June 1956; age 68) is an illustrator who created the covers for several Star Trek novels.

Born in Fort Collins, Colorado he attended the Colorado Institute of Art and the Colorado State University and later the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. After his move he worked for the Walt Disney Company and became the head of the matte department. During this time he contributed to several Disney films including The Black Hole (1979, along with Star Trek: The Original Series actor Stephen McEveety, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier special effects foreman Mike Edmonson, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture special effects artist Barry Seybert), The Watcher in the Woods (1980), Tron (1982), Dick Tracy (1990), and I, Robot (2004).

His first published work was the album cover for "The Commodores Greatest Hits" and was followed by over 500 covers for books, including his Star Trek novel covers and over fifty covers for K.A. Applegate's "Animorphs" series.
