David Spielberg (6 March 19391 June 2016; age 77) was the actor who portrayed Commander Calvin Hutchinson in the Star Trek: The Next Generation sixth season episode "Starship Mine".

Born in Texas, he was of mixed Romanian-Mexican heritage and came from a Jewish family on his father's side. Despite his name and religion, he had no relation to the famous film director Steven Spielberg.

After serving a brief two-year enlistment in the United States Navy, Spielberg attended college at the University of Texas but dropped out after two years to pursue an acting career in New York City. In 1972 he broke into film work with a role in The Trial of the Catonsville Nine, also starring Davis Roberts.

Additional roles included The Hunter (1980, with LeVar Burton), and Alice (1990, with Keye Luke). He made three appearances on Highway to Heaven, once portraying the father of a character played by Gabriel Damon, as well as an appearance on an episode of Hunter (1988, starring Charles Hallahan, with Chad Allen).

In his later career, Spielberg mostly starred in television guest roles, accumulating an impressive array of appearances on such popular shows as L.A Law, ER (starring Eriq La Salle), seaQuest DSV (1995, starring Rosalind Ingledew and Marco Sanchez), Law & Order, Baywatch, The West Wing (2000, starring Martin Sheen, with Harry Groener), and Judging Amy. His final role was in Flight of the Living Dead: Outbreak on a Plane (2007).

David Spielberg died of cancer in Los Angeles, California, on June 1, 2016. He was 77.
