A death race was a dangerous competitive sport in which players used their race cars to get to the end of a deadly obstacle course on a race track. The goal was to be the first one to the finish line after a certain number of laps.
In 2380, Gernba realized that trial by combat was going to have to be replaced by something else. Vindor suggested that they do an actual trial with a judge. But this was ignored, as Gernba decided that death races were the way to go, he then says "Start building a crystal car!" (LD: "Temporal Edict")
