Deneb, also known as Alpha Cygni or Alpha Cygnus (an alternate spelling) or 50 Cygni, was an inhabited planetary system in the Alpha Quadrant.

With a magnitude of 1, it was one of the brightest and most luminous stars in Earth's night sky. In the northern summer sky, this star, along with Altair and Vega, were the corners of the "Summer Triangle".

Notable lifeforms found in this system included the Bandi and the Denebian slime devils of Deneb IV and the Denebians of Deneb V. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before", "I, Mudd"; TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint"; DS9: "The Nagus"; PRO: "Supernova, Part 1")

Components[]

Stellar system[]

This was a single star system. The primary star Deneb (the proper name for Alpha Cygni) was an A-type blue supergiant.

Planetary system[]

In this system, there were at least twenty planets. One of these planets, Deneb IV, was located in the system's habitable zone. Other planets in this system were Deneb II, Deneb V, Alpha Cygnus IX, and Deneb XX. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before", "I, Mudd"; TNG: "Sarek"; DS9: "Whispers"}

History[]

In the mid-23rd century, James T. Kirk and Gary Mitchell came to this system to complete a mission on Deneb IV. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before")

The historic Treaty of Alpha Cygnus IX was signed in this system. (TNG: "Sarek")

In 2364, from the perspective of the Federation, the Deneb system was located on the outer frontier of explored space. (TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint")

This system was mentioned in a chart of Starfleet allies which appeared on the USS Dauntless logistics strategic data display in 2384. (PRO: "Supernova, Part 1")

Stellar cartography[]

The Deneb system was visible from Earth in the constellation Cygnus. This system was approximately 2,615 light years from Sol.

In 2293, the location of Deneb in the Milky Way Galaxy was labeled in a star chart that was in Captain James T. Kirk's quarters aboard the USS Enterprise-A. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, okudagram)

Information on this system was derived from the episodes, the reference works Star Trek: Star Charts and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library, and real-world sources. The reference works were used extensively in the creation of star charts seen in Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Lower Decks. The real-world information added to the article was current as of 2025.
Alpha Cygnus is a rare Bayer designation for this system. The more common name is Alpha Cygni; this name was seen for the first time in the episode "Supernova, Part 1".
