Desertion was the crime of enlisted personnel abandoning the military service to which they formerly belonged. One who was accused of desertion was considered a type of renegade known as a deserter. (ENT: "The Catwalk")

Guri, Renth, and Rellus Tagrim had all deserted the Takret Militia by 2152 because they considered their leaders to be corrupt. (ENT: "The Catwalk")

In 2267, James T. Kirk recorded in his captain's log that the crew of the USS Enterprise had deserted the starship for the Omicron colony, while under the influence of the Omicron spores, and that he was powerless to stop them. He briefly fell under their influence, but snapped out of it before he could leave. After he beamed Spock back to the ship, he expressed his feigned desire to deal with Spock's desertion. In 2370, Lieutenant Commander Calvin Hudson deserted Starfleet from his position as attaché to the colonies in the Demilitarized Zone to join the Maquis. (DS9: "The Maquis, Part I", "The Maquis, Part II")

Lieutenant Ro Laren also deserted Starfleet for the Maquis in the same year. (TNG: "Preemptive Strike")

In 2380, Ensign Peanut Hamper deserted the USS Cerritos rather than take on a dangerous mission to introduce a computer virus to an attacking Pakled vessel. (LD: "No Small Parts")
