(written from a Production point of view)

Richard "Dick" Ramon Brownfield (born 10 March 1938; age 82) worked, while employed by Desilu Productions as part of Jim Rugg's team in a junior position, on the special effects throughout the run of Star Trek: The Original Series, including the first pilot episode "The Cage", though uncredited as was usual in that era. Subsequently, in the employment of Paramount Television, he worked in the same capacity, now as a senior special effects staffer, on the entire run of Star Trek: The Next Generation. When The Next Generation ended, he moved on to Star Trek: Voyager and worked on the first four seasons of the series. He was also the special effects coordinator for the 1996 video game Star Trek: Borg.

Captain Dick Brownfield was named for him and appeared on a number of dedication plaques for various starships.

Brownfield has been featured in the 1995 documentary, Star Trek: Voyager - Inside the New Adventure.

Career outside Star TrekEdit

Beside his work on Star Trek, Dick Brownfield created special effects for the television drama The Triangle Factory Fire Scandal (1979) and the horror sequel The Hills Have Eyes Part II (1985, with Michael Berryman and Penny Johnson and special effects artist Mark Stimson) and worked as special effects coordinator on Robert Duncan McNeill's short film 9mm of Love (2000, with Ethan Phillips, Liz Vassey, Patricia Tallman, editor Daryl Baskin, assistant directors Michael Risner and David Trotti, and special effects artist Mark Stimson). 9mm of Love was Brownfield's last recorded motion picture industry work.

Father of two by wife Beverly, with whom he was married on 9 September 1962, Brownfield is currently enjoying retirement on a ranch located in the southern part of California.
