A doppler compensator was a component of Federation starships. Malfunctions of this component were audible.
In late 2375, when Captain Benjamin Sisko asked Miles O'Brien whether he heard something, O'Brien attributed the sound to the USS Defiant's doppler compensators being out of phase. (DS9: "What You Leave Behind")
