The driver coil was an important piece of propulsion technology found in both warp and impulse engines.

When Columbia NX-02 was launched in 2154, Ensign Rivers reported to Commander Tucker that the driver coils were configured for warp speed. (ENT: "Affliction")

Driver coils were also a stage in 24th century impulse drive, using energy from the impulse fusion reactors to envelop the starship in a low-energy subspace field intended to lighten the relative mass of the starship it encompasses. This significantly reduced the mass burden on the impulse drive, allowing for unprecedented rates of acceleration.

While inside the nucleogenic cloud being in 2371, the USS Voyager lost its rear driver coil assembly. (VOY: "The Cloud")

Later that year, Voyager attempted to leave a swarm of space-dwelling lifeforms by releasing power from the capacitance cells straight into the ship's driver coils. (VOY: "Elogium")

In 2372, the driver coil assembly in a shuttlecraft piloted by Tom Paris received a reaction from electromagnetic anomalies in the atmosphere of "Planet Hell", which led to the shuttle crashing on the surface. (VOY: "Parturition")

The Kazon destroyed Voyager's driver coil assembly in their attack on the ship in late 2372. (VOY: "Basics, Part I")

In 2373, Miles O'Brien ordered the driver coils of the USS Defiant to be configured for impulse speed. (DS9: "For the Uniform")

The Delta Flyer possessed accelerated driver coils, which were admired by Irina in 2377. (VOY: "Drive")

Later that year, the Delta Flyer was attacked by the Lokirrim because they suspected The Doctor was a photonic insurgent, which was banned from being in their space. The attack damaged the Flyer's thrusters. Seven of Nine tried to restore propulsion by reinitializing the Flyer's driver coils. (VOY: "Body and Soul")

Later on, Loken ordered Dayla to take Nightingale's warp core offline, bypass the driver coil, and shunt power to the polaron matrix to activate the ship's cloaking device. (VOY: "Nightingale")
