The ECS Fortunate (ECS-2801) was an United Earth Y-class freighter that was in service with the Earth Cargo Service in the mid-22nd century. In 2151, the Fortunate was commanded by Captain Keene. Matthew Ryan served as her first officer prior to 2151. The Keene family had been on the Fortunate for three generations by 2151.

One of the Fortunate's last stops before its eight-month journey was at Jupiter Station. There, the station's cargo handlers improperly balanced the load of module 2. Ryan and Shaw later had to reorganize the load to compensate for the noticeable shaking caused by the module being off-balance.

For several months throughout 2151, the Fortunate was attacked by Nausicaan pirate ships, under the intent of stealing the ship's cargo.

In one attack, the Fortunate was damaged and Captain Keene injured, and one of the Nausicaans was captured in the process. Ryan led the ship on a mission of revenge, which led to his later demotion. (ENT: "Fortunate Son")

Technical data

In a discussion with Jonathan Archer, Captain Keene theorized that with the onset of faster starships he would need to upgrade to at least a warp three engine to stay in business. As Y-class freighter, ECS Fortunate operated with its original warp reactor capable of propelling the ship to speeds of warp 1.8. With a warp three engine, it was possible to make what would have been earlier a five year cargo run in six months. (ENT: "Fortunate Son")
