The ECS Fortunate (ECS-2801) was a United Earth Y-class cargo freighter that was in service with the Earth Cargo Service in the early to mid-22nd century. The vessel had a crew complement of twenty-three. In 2151, the Fortunate was commanded by Captain Jackson Keene. Matthew Ryan served as her first officer prior to 2151. (ENT: "Fortunate Son")

By 2151, the Fortunate had been home to three generations of the Keene family.

One of the Fortunate's last stops before it made an journey was at Jupiter Station. There, the station's cargo handlers improperly balanced the load of cargo module 2. Ryan and Shaw later had to reorganize the load to compensate for noticeable shaking caused by the module being off-balance.

In the first draft script of "Fortunate Son", this issue was said to be with module 4 rather than module 2. However, it was changed to the latter module by the time the episode's final draft script was written.

For several months throughout 2151, the Fortunate was attacked by Nausicaan ships, under the intent of stealing the ship's cargo. In one such attack, the Fortunate was damaged, Captain Keene was injured, and one of the Nausicaans was captured. The incident was investigated by Enterprise NX-01, during which Ryan led the ship on a mission of revenge, a course of action that resulted in him later being demoted by Captain Keene. (ENT: "Fortunate Son")

In an ultimately unused line of dialogue from the "Fortunate Son" first draft script, Trip Tucker speculated, early in Enterprise's investigation of the Fortunate, that the freighter may have merely "ran out of gas." The script's stage directions went on to indicate that Captain Archer feared that wasn't the case.

Technical data

The ECS Fortunate was upgraded with a second plasma cannon. In a discussion with Captain Archer, Captain Keene theorized that, with the onset of faster starships, he would need to upgrade to at least a warp three engine to stay in business. As a Y-class freighter, the Fortunate operated with its original warp reactor capable of propelling the ship to speeds of warp 1.8. With a warp three engine, it was possible to make what would have been earlier a five-year cargo run in six months. (ENT: "Fortunate Son")

Personnel

In the script for "Fortunate Son", the ECS Fortunate was described as "space-worn" and "grimy, care-worn." In the final draft of that script but not the first draft, the craft's bridge was also scripted to be "careworn."
The set of the Fortunate's bridge was built on Paramount Stage 8. The sets for all the ship's other interiors – the access corridors, the infirmary, and the interiors of cargo modules 4 and 8 – were constructed on Paramount Stage 18. (Call sheets)
