Matthew Ryan's mother baked a cake whenever someone on the North Star had a birthday. Due to a reliance on ingredients, Ryan punned that everyone "knew batter than to ask" what was in it. She and Ryan's father died in the disaster which befell the North Star. After their deaths, Ryan transferred to the ECS Fortunate. In 2151, Travis Mayweather expressed his condolences to Ryan after hearing how and when they had died. (ENT: "Fortunate Son")
