The Einstein (NCC-17016) was a Federation Class F shuttlecraft that was in service with Starfleet in the mid-23rd century, attached to the USS Enterprise. (TOS: "The Doomsday Machine")

In 2267, this shuttle was piloted by Commodore Matt Decker on a suicidal mission to the planet killer. Though the commodore failed to destroy the robot, sensor scans by the Enterprise gave indications that the machine had been damaged.

With this knowledge at hand, Captain James T. Kirk flew the USS Constellation into the maw of the robot. This collision, when coupled with the detonation of the starship's impulse engines, wrecked the doomsday machine. (TOS: "The Doomsday Machine")

Appendices[]

Background information[]

The shuttlecraft was named after Albert Einstein.

In the original version of the episode, the flight of the shuttle was recycled footage of the Galileo from "The Galileo Seven". For the remastered version, CBS Digital crafted a CGI model with new registry and name. Though the registry was visible in the episode, the name was illegible. On StarTrek.com (citation needededit), Mike Okuda, when asked for the name of the shuttle, replied that it was the Einstein.

The connection between the destroyed shuttle and the registry NCC-170106 was first established in the Ships of the Line. On pages 56-57 of this book, which was released a year prior to the airing of the remastered episode, there was a painting by Mojo which depicted the shuttle within the maw of the doomsday machine.
