Electromagnetic scanners were sensor devices carried aboard Galaxy-class starships. These scanners included gamma pulse generators.

In 2366, when the USS Enterprise-D's computer systems became infested with nanites, Captain Picard ordered Worf to prepare to use the generators to irradiate the systems in order to neutralize the nanites. (TNG: "Evolution")

In 2367, the Enterprise's lateral EM scanners detected levels of radiation that were indicative of the presence of a class M planet, but the planet in question was momentarily invisible to the sensors. (TNG: "In Theory")

The script of Star Trek contains an alternate scene in which the USS Kelvin scans the Narada using EM sensors, which are said to be passive.
