The elk was a large species of deer native to Earth.
When The Doctor entered the Beowulf holodeck program in 2372, elk meat was served in Hrothgar's hall. Hrothgar said that elk had once been plentiful in his woods but had since become rare. (VOY: "Heroes and Demons")
In the story "Flotter and the Perfect Day", the first chapter opened with elk frolicking in front of Yosemite National Park's Half Dome. Frightened by the appearance of an alien spacecraft over their valley, the elk flee. (VOY: "Lineage")
