The Epsilon Indi system was an inhabited planetary system in the Beta Quadrant.
In the prime universe, this system was affiliated with the United Federation of Planets. In the mirror universe, this system was affiliated with the Terran Empire.
Components[]
Stellar system[]
This was a trinary star system. It was organized into a single star system and a binary star system.
The primary star Epsilon Indi (the proper name for Epsilon Indi A) was a K-type dwarf in the single star system. Orbiting this system, there was a binary system with the brown dwarfs Epsilon Indi Ba and Epsilon Indi Bb.
Planetary system[]
In this system, there were at least four planets, including Epsilon Indi II and Epsilon Indi IV. (TNG: "Eye of the Beholder"; DIS: "Terra Firma, Part 1")
History[]
In early history, a band of marauders based on Triacus wreaked chaos on the inhabitants of the Epsilon Indi system. After many centuries of intrusion, the inhabitants of Epsilon Indi were finally able to rise up and destroy the marauders, leading to their corporeal extinction. (TOS: "And the Children Shall Lead")
In the mirror universe, the Terran Empire operated an Imperial Shipyard at Epsilon Indi IV in or prior to 2257. (DIS: "Terra Firma, Part 1")
By the mid-24th century, Humans were living on Epsilon Indi II. (TNG: "Eye of the Beholder", okudagram)
Stellar cartography[]
The Epsilon Indi system was visible from Earth in the constellation Indus. This system was approximately 12 light years from Sol.
Location of Epsilon Indi on a United Earth star chart, 2154
In the 2150s, this system's position was labeled on an United Earth star chart which was displayed in several crew and guest quarters aboard the Enterprise. (Star Trek: Enterprise, set decoration)
In 2364, the location of Epsilon Indi was denoted in a star chart of a stellar neighborhood with Sol at the center. This chart was stored in the USS Enterprise-D library computer. Later that year, the chart was scanned by the Portal of Outpost 63. (TNG: "The Naked Now", production art; TNG: "The Last Outpost")
Appendices[]
Background information[]
Information on this system was derived from the episodes, from the reference works Star Trek: Star Charts and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library, and from real world sources. The reference works were used extensively in the creation of star charts seen in Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Lower Decks. The real-world information added to the article was current as of 2025.
This system's quadrant of origin was inferred based on the position of neighboring locations – 61 Cygni, Alpha Centauri, Procyon, Sol, Tau Ceti, and Wolf 359 – as seen in the star charts appearing in the Star Trek: Discovery episode "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad" and in the Star Trek: Picard episode "Maps and Legends".
Both the Star Trek: Star Charts (pp. 45, 66, "United Federation of Planets I") and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385") located the Draylaxian homeworld in this system.
The star chart seen in the series Star Trek: Enterprise made its first appearance in Crewman Daniels quarters in "Cold Front". It was also seen in several other episodes of the series, from 2151 to 2154. (For more information, see Federation star charts#United Earth Alpha/Beta star chart)
The current location of Epsilon Indi in the Beta Quadrant was based on the most recent star charts seen in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Section 31.
In 2018, the existence of an exoplanet in this system had been confirmed. Named Epsilon Indi Ab, it was a gas giant larger than Jupiter. Six years later, this planet was directly imaged by the James Webb Space Telescope.
Apocrypha[]
The Pocket TOS novel Planet of Judgment mentioned a species called the Tarl (β) who came from this system.
