In starship classification, an explorer is a multi-role starship, equipped with a wide variety of tactical, scientific and diplomatic capabilities. Vessels of this type are intended to perform very long duration missions, sometimes lasting 10 or more Earth years. Explorers are similar to heavy cruisers, with two exceptions:
- Explorers are intended for longer duration missions than Heavy Cruisers, often lasting 10 years or longer.
- Explorers are built in smaller numbers than Heavy Cruisers.
The Galaxy class is the best example of this type of ship.
