A fan dance was a form of dance that used hand fans to elicit sexual desire. As such, it was occasionally used as a distraction technique.

To distract the Galactic Army of Light during a rescue mission on Nimbus III in 2287, Commander Nyota Uhura emerged from the desert in the night and performed a fan dance with palm leaves while singing "The Moon's a Window to Heaven." (Star Trek V: The Final Frontier)

In 2380, Ensign Sam Rutherford found himself blacking out during a mission to a Vulcan museum. Part of the mission was to distract the museum guard while Lieutenant Shaxs broke into a Romulan Bird-of-Prey, where Rutherford found himself expected to perform a fan dance. Rutherford later retold the events to Clar during a Prime ceremony. (LD: "Veritas")
