The Kazon fighter or Kazon shuttle was a small spacecraft originally used by the Trabe.

History[]

Many of them were seized by the Kazon after they overthrew the Trabe in 2346. (VOY: "Alliances")

Kazon fighters were first observed by the crew of USS Voyager in 2371 on Ocampa. They were controlled by the Kazon-Ogla and were used by First Maje Jabin. (VOY: "Caretaker") Another Ogla fighter was used by Kar to attack Commander Chakotay's Type 8 shuttlecraft. (VOY: "Initiations")

In 2372, a fighter from the Trabe convoy was used in a failed assassination attempt on several Kazon first majes attending a conference on Sobras. Voyager fired three photon torpedoes at it, forcing it to disengage. (VOY: "Alliances")

The Kazon-Nistrim also employed the fighter design. One was stolen by Tom Paris to escape Culluh's raider, while another was used by Teirna as part of Seska's plot to lure Voyager into a trap. (VOY: "Investigations", "Basics, Part I")

Technical data[]

The fighter closely resembled the Kazon raider, but was approximately the size of a Federation shuttlecraft. It could be operated by a single person, was capable planetary landing, and often found aboard Kazon raiders and Predator-class warships. (VOY: "Caretaker", "Initiations", "Investigations")

It was composed of polyduranide alloy, duranium, magnesite, electroceramics, and a relatively large amount of carbon. (VOY: "Initiations")

These vessels armed with at least two forward and phaser banks, as well as an aft photon torpedo launcher. It was protected by shields. This class was significantly outmatched by a Federation Type 8 shuttlecraft. (VOY: "Caretaker", "Initiations")

Background information[]

This vessel was described in dialogue in "Investigations" and "Basics, Part I" as a "Kazon shuttle", but was of a different design than the Kazon shuttle that appeared, described as such in "Maneuvers". It was identified as a "Kazon fighter" by David Stipes. [1](X)

According to the 8 June 1994 draft of the "Caretaker" script these craft were initially identified as "several alien surface AIRCRAFT – none of them looking too spiffy."

According to the script for "Initiations", this craft was described primarily as a "Kazon shuttle", but was also described by several generic names including "Kazon spacecraft", "Kazon ship", and "Kazon vessel". The script also noted that it was "a small but fierce-looking starship."

The Kazon fighter was designed by Dan Curry. (Star Trek: Communicator issue 105, p. 59)

Though physically identical to the Kazon raider, the most distinguishing visual feature between the two studio models was found the design of the forward command/piloting "module", where the raider had smaller windows suggesting a larger "bridge" area, and the fighter had larger, more traditional looking "cockpit" windows in place. For further information, please see Kazon fighter model.

Those that appeared in "Caretaker" matte painting had neither feature, but were clearly scaled at less than 5 meters tall.
