Forums ForumsTen Forward → The FandomDesktop opt-in is now LIVE (replywatch)

After all the blogs Fandom shared with previews, FandomDesktop is now LIVE for you to check out! During this time, logged-in users will be able to switch from Oasis to FandomDesktop as their wiki experience through an opt-in toggle, found in an on-site banner and in user preferences. You will also be able to switch back by changing your user preferences.

Please do note that not everything has been developed yet, so expect changes to still occur. However, you already get access now so editors and admins get used to the new design and, especially, the admins can prepare this community for full migration, which will come early this summer.

Admins, you should definitely check out the new Theme Designer and the FandomDesktop preparation guide for advanced customization. When you feel that your wiki is ready for the new experience, there's a button in your Admin Dashboard to let us know, which may impact the order of the definite migration. If you are having trouble with something, please do reach out to me: on the wiki or even on Discord (Lostris#4280), I'm around to make this transition easier on all of you!

You can all read more about it in this blog.

Please let me know in the comments section what you think of the new design. Good, bad, bug report, anything that's on your mind about it, I'd love to hear it! Please be as specific as possible in your feedback though, like if it's good, what do you like exactly? Or what feature or layout don't you like? And especially when you've found something that doesn't work, please let me know as many details as possible:

  • what browser are you using (Chrome, Firefox, etc)
  • What editor? VisualEditor? VisualEditor - source mode (also known as the 2017 editor)? Or the source editor (aka the 2010 editor) If you are unsure, you can check which editor you're using via your preferences.
  • detailed steps to reproduce the bug (even if you think it's glaringly obvious). Providing me with links, screenshots, videos, etc is super useful!

Looking forward to your feedback! Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 13:18, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

On certain pages, such as Friend or mirror universe, the banner at the top has text that is covering up elements the page itself, such as the quote at the top or the image. I'm currently using Firefox. Oh, and after posting that, I don't get any option to click on that image to make it bigger. ProfessorTofty (talk) 04:17, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
Covering Text
@ProfessorTofty, it seems the breaking change is here:
*, :after, :before {
    box-sizing: inherit;
}
One solution could be to add box-sizing: content-box; to the div#ma-article-type selector in the CSS.  CaptFredricks talkcontr 05:56, 2 June 2021 (UTC)

That indeed seems to have done the trick, thanks for the suggestion! Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 21:07, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

You're welcome, Lady Lostris. Happy to help!  CaptFredricks talkcontr 02:13, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

General note, if anyone finds anything else out of place, don't hesitate to report it (even if we may already be aware of it, better to have been told twice than not at all).

If you'd like to share general feedback about FandomDesktop, you can also most definitely do that here. I'd love to hear what you all think of it! Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 07:10, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

Printing[]

When attempting to print an article, the banner at the top appears on each page as well as the left sidebar. At the end of the article, all items under Fan Feed appear in the print preview.

Can something be done so that only the article is printed without all the extraneous information? The preceding unsigned comment was added by Referee696 (talkcontribs).

Since I have never printed a wiki page before and thus don't know how it is supposed to look like, cause you please provide some screenshots about how it now looks on FandomDesktop and how it looked on Oasis? Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 12:39, 13 June 2021 (UTC)

I do not have any screenshots of articles that I printed prior to June 1, but I do have printed copies of articles printed which I can scan. I can print the same article to show the differences between the printouts. However, I do not know how to add scans to the forum. Referee696 (talk) 22:37, 13 June 2021 (UTC)

No need to print extra articles. Is this on FandomDesktop or Oasis? Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 07:37, 14 June 2021 (UTC)

It happened on the change made a few weeks ago. How do you tell the difference between FandomDesktop and Oasis?Referee696 (talk) 10:08, 14 June 2021 (UTC)

FandomDesktop is currently only live if you've opted into it. You can see your current settings in Special:Preferences. -- Renegade54 (talk) 18:55, 14 June 2021 (UTC)

The printing issue occurs with the ForumDesktop skin. Switching back to the Oasis skin, printing issueshave beem resolved. -- Referee696 (talk) 19:56, 14 June 2021 (UTC)

Misaligned input cursor[]

When I try to edit (in Source Editor) with FandomDesktop, the input cursor does not line up properly with the text or formatting I'm editing. If I'm near the top of a section, the cursor will be slightly above the line I'm editing, but the further down section I go the worse the misalignment is. If I'm editing near the end of a long section, the cursor can be several lines above where I'm trying to edit. It's quite frustrating — sufficiently so that I've now switched back to Oasis. (However, I can switch back to FandomDesktop if this is not something you all are already aware of, and you need screenshots.)

FWIW, this is using Safari on a Mac; I did try Chrome to see if it was any better, but it had the same problem. —Josiah Rowe (talk) 03:36, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

I'm seeing the same thing. ProfessorTofty (talk) 22:06, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
So I just followed up on this with one my fellow Fandom specialists and this is apparently something that's being caused by the local CSS here on the wiki. The local admins will need to look into that and clear out whatever code it is that's causing that issue. ProfessorTofty (talk) 22:12, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
So, when this happens, can you try to do an "inspect" on it? Because I don't see that in the source editor on FF, Chrome, or Safari. -- Sulfur (talk) 23:48, 18 July 2021 (UTC)

This is still happening. I'll attach a screenshot if I can. —Josiah Rowe (talk) 17:43, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

Here:

Could it have anything to do with the Javascript I installed many years ago, after a recommendation I was given here on MA but can no longer find? It's at Community:User:Josiah Rowe/global.js. —Josiah Rowe (talk) 17:48, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

The source of this bug has been traced back to the syntax highlighting you have on. If you disabled that within your editor, it should rectify itself (that button that looks like a marker). Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 18:10, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

Sorry, where would I find that button? The only thing I see that looks like a marker is the "add topic" button on the top left of the page. I don't see anything that looks like a marker in the editor. —Josiah Rowe (talk) 18:29, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

Apologies, you're using the 2017 editor. You will find the option to disable the syntax when.you kick that clog wheel on the right. It's one of the options in the dropdown. Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 18:42, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

Aha! That does indeed seem to have solved the problem. Thank you. —Josiah Rowe (talk) 19:01, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

I'm having the same problem but I can't tell which option it is. SketchFan98 (talk) 08:25, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

Never mind. SketchFan98 (talk) 09:44, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

Images and text wrapping[]

Thumbnails that are not placed under a section header seem to have an extra blank line before the text starts. Is this intentional? -- UncertainError (talk) 08:08, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

Can you provide a link please? Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 08:38, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

For example, on the article starship that leads with a thumbnail, the text isn't aligned with the top margin of the image but rather gets pushed down, leaving an extra blank line (compare with spacecraft which doesn't have a thumbnail on top). But this doesn't happen if the thumbnail is under a section header (see USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)). -- UncertainError (talk) 21:51, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

It may be something specific to the H1 header. Take a look at the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) article again... even the infobox/sidebar at the top of the page gets pushed down a line. -- Renegade54 (talk) 22:05, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
It's not the H1 header itself; if you put an H1 header in the middle of the article (which you should never do, normally), you get the proper spacing, just like with an H2, H3, etc. It's more something to do with the page header itself it appears. -- Renegade54 (talk) 22:08, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

What you pointed out seems to be due to the disambigs. Anyway, the issue I pointed out happens with thumbnails in the middle of articles too (see sword) -- UncertainError (talk) 22:12, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

I've heard about this issue before, I'll dig around to find it again, see if there is either a ticker or a solution for it. Thanks for letting me know! Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 14:55, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
I've added some local css to remedy this issue in the meantime. Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 23:39, 14 August 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for working on this. If it helps, the text still gets pushed down if the first image is inside a sidebar, or if the article has a banner above the thumbnail. -- UncertainError (talk) 22:54, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

The text being pushed down in the other cases is an issue that's being worked on as we speak, so that will hopefully be remedied site-wide shortly. At that point, we can also try removing the css again and see if that issue was included in the fix as well. Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 21:42, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

New version of Wiki no longer shows pages we've clicked on before[]

Moved from Portal:Main.

Anybody know why this no longer shows if you've clicked on a page... it used to remain a darker color. Now it doesn't. Is there some way in our personal settings to change this or can WIKI change it?

And if you're going to DELETE MY POST and tell me to MOVE IT TO THE PROPER PAGE, please tell me where the PROPER PAGE IS!!! Don't just delete it!

Clermont34711 (talk) 21:04, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

The following styles were not copied over, by the ADMINS, from [[MediaWiki:Wikia.css]] over to MediaWiki:Fandomdesktop.css, thus they are not loaded if you are on the new Fandom Desktop skin
a {
  color:#66BBFF;
}

a:visited {
  color:#4070D0;
}

Thanks for the explanation. Is it possible for an Admin to make this change? I'm sure I speak for many others when I say it is much more appreciated! Clermont34711 (talk) 22:19, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

The ADMINS didn't set up the new skin, for the most part... Fandom staff did. I'll see if I still have privs to edit that CSS, and if so, add that bit. -- Renegade54 (talk) 18:04, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
OK, fixed. -- Renegade54 (talk) 18:09, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
My hero! Now you can be pulled out from under that bus... –Gvsualan (talk) 18:19, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, but who's gonna fix those tire tracks... :P -- Renegade54 (talk) 19:33, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
I was not meaning to throw anyone under the bus. I was just pointing out this was an admin solution and not a bug. You may want to look at wikia.css and wikia.js to see if anything else may need to be copied over to fandomdesktop.css and fandomdesktop.js respectively. -- M o r p h i a s (C | T/D/W ) 594 contributions and counting 19:44, 17 August 2021 (UTC)

Can I ask why now it is not showing these changes? Renegade it was great when you made the change. Now it seems to have gone back to the original way. Which I don't like. Clermont34711 (talk) 21:35, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

That's on me, as I removed part of that code as it was causing the light theme to be unreadable and was something regulated through Theme Designer already anyway. I'll take another look at the change though. And yes, I didn't completely copy over all the code that is within Wikia.css, cause it needs to be reviewed piece by piece for 1. usefulness and 2. accessibility on both skins. That took more time than I had at that moment and it's a project still on the to-do list, along with several other styling updates, unless the admins tackle it first. Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 21:42, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

Could you at least put that bit of code back in until you figure out the rest? It is much better to know what pages I have already been to. Clermont34711 (talk) 21:51, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

As said, I was going to take another look at that code :-) Which I've fixed now. Weird copy/paste issue due to search boxes in MediaWiki loading differently than on a regular page. In any case, you should once again see which links you've visited before. Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 21:56, 19 August 2021 (UTC)
