Biography

In 2155, Commander Jonathan Archer, first officer of the ISS Enterprise, sent Gardner information on an extremely advanced starship being held by the Tholians, which Archer felt would be of enormous value to Starfleet. After taking control of Enterprise from Captain Forrest in order to pursue this lead, Archer ordered Lieutenant Sato to transmit the relevant information, knowing that, if Forrest were able to regain command, Gardner would find the information intriguing, and issue an order for Forrest to continue the mission into Tholian space. Such a scenario did occur, and Forrest was forced to reinstate Archer as first officer upon receiving a directive from Gardner to proceed with the mission. (ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly")

Later, after Forrest had been killed and Archer had appropriated the ship, the USS Defiant, Gardner responded to Archer's demand that Starfleet surrender to him by angrily stating that, if Archer were to approach Earth, he would be immediately attacked. Before the Defiant could reach Earth, however, Lieutenant Sato appropriated command of the ship from Archer with help from Sergeant Mayweather. Introducing herself as "Empress Sato" upon arriving in Earth orbit, she demanded Gardner's immediate surrender. (ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II")

Gardner was played by John Mahon.
This is the only time that Admiral Gardner was ever seen, in either the prime universe or in the mirror universe, although the prime universe Gardner had been referenced several times throughout the run of Star Trek: Enterprise.
