Gargantua was the name of fictional giant from the fable The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel published on Earth in the 16th century. The term "Gargantua" has since been used as synonymous with something that is massive or something which possesses great strength.

In 2268, Montgomery Scott referred to one of the androids of Mudd's Planet as a "Female Gargantua" after Scott was forcibly thrown into a transporter beam and transported to Mudd against his will. (TOS: "I, Mudd")
