A government was a structure for governing a state or other population group. Societies without government were described as anarchy. (TNG: "Allegiance")

A temporary form of government which served as a political transition to the next was called a provisional government. (DS9: "Emissary", et al.)

A government with authority over an entire planetary body was a world government. (TNG: "Up The Long Ladder", "Attached")

Governments didn't need to be connected to the populations they governed. They could also function in exile. In 2373, Major Kira Nerys suggested to Tekeny Ghemor that he'd set up a Cardassian government in exile. (DS9: "Ties of Blood and Water")

In 2024, Chris Brynner commented to Jadzia Dax that, to get government contracts, people had to "look just like the rest of the drones." This precluded large tattoos. (DS9: "Past Tense, Part I", "Past Tense, Part II")

Specific governments[]

The following is a list of governments and political structures. For individual races, see species.

A Category: Governments has been created to list governments, and a Category: Agencies to list political and military groups.

In the first draft script of ENT: "Fortunate Son", the Nausicaans were mentioned as having a government which was purportedly in a constant mode of "transition."

Earth Two was established as having had a government in the final draft script of TOS: "Miri" but not in the final version of that installment.
