A gravitational wave or gravity wave is a gravitational shift propagating across space. It carries energy as gravitational radiation.
The ancient Promellians harnessed gravity waves as an energy source. (DIS: "Under the Twin Moons")
In 2258, Starfleet long-range sensors detected high-energy gamma rays and gravitational waves consistent with a quantum singularity at the site of USS Discovery's disappearance during the battle with Control. However, witnesses to the event all insisted that the ship exploded. (DIS: "Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2")
In 2259, while investigating a stable vortex on the Kerkhovian moon, the shuttle Cervantes was overpowered by gravitational waves and collided with the anomaly. (SNW: "Charades")
In 3189, Zareh detected high-energy gamma rays and gravitational waves preceding Discovery's appearance, which led him to conclude that they had traveled through time. (DIS: "Far From Home")
The Dark Matter Anomaly that appeared in 3190 generated subspace gravitational waves of extreme power, which were responsible for crippling Deep Space Repair Beta Six and destroying Kwejian. They were at first thought to be consistent with those produced by merging binary black holes; later close investigation by Discovery revealed the waves to have a different pattern. The waves damaged both Discovery and Booker's ship, which was able to "surf" one of the waves out of the DMA's accretion disk. (DIS: "Anomaly (DIS)")
Later that year, when the second DMA threatened Earth and Ni'Var, debris propelled by its gravitational waves reached both planets ahead of the anomaly itself. At Earth, the debris was accelerated to a velocity of 2,100 kilometers per second. (DIS: "The Galactic Barrier", "Coming Home")
