A gumball machine was a type of vending machine that allowed for purchases of chewing gum that was in the shape of a ball.
In 1986, there was several gumball machines located at the Feinberg's Loan and Pawn antique shop with what appeared to be red gumballs inside of it. They were located next to a teddy bear. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)
