(written from a Production point of view)

HMS Beagle was a British Royal Navy sailing ship named after the type of dog of the same name. It is probable that this ship was also the namesake of the SS Beagle.

During the mid-19th century, Charles Darwin traveled aboard the Beagle as it journeyed into the unknown. At the time of the Beagle journey, Darwin sailed without a single musket. In a deleted scene from Star Trek Nemesis, Captain Picard reminded Dr. Crusher of Darwin sailing aboard the Beagle without any muskets as he observed the assignment of phasers to her medical personnel. The reference to this vessel was cut from the theatrical version of the movie, but was included in the deleted scenes feature of the movies' original DVD release.
