A hairpin was a Human device women used to keep their hair in place. Hairsticks were hairpins that looked similar to chopsticks.

In 1947, Rom gestured toward Nurse Garland's hair while asking for her hairpin in Ferengi, since his universal translator was broken. She gave it to him, and he used it to work on Nog's translator, which was also broken. Garland observed that the procedure looked painful. (DS9: "Little Green Men")

According to Mess Officer Breil, hairpins were among several objects that seemed to disappear on the USS Enterprise while the starship was orbiting the planet Cepheus in 2269. (TAS: "The Terratin Incident")

Keiko Ishikawa wore hairsticks while preparing for her wedding to Miles O'Brien in 2367. (TNG: "Data's Day")

In Julian Bashir, Secret Agent, Doctor Bashir, playing the role of Patrick Merriweather, used his charm to convince Doctor Honey Bare, who was imbued with the body of Jadzia Dax due to a transporter accident, to give him her hairpin. He then used it to undo handcuffs that had been binding him and Elim Garak. (DS9: "Our Man Bashir")
