Captain Harr Caras was an Orion in command of the science vessel D'Var in the 23rd century. Atypical to most perceptions of Orions of his era, Caras and his crew were scientists, and believed Orion pirates gave the rest of their people a bad name.
In 2259, the D'Var conducted a survey on Krulmuth-B, in a sector prone to predations by Orion pirates, and encountered a time portal that had been initially found by the USS Enterprise. Caras had the portal beamed aboard his ship, but the Enterprise needed it in order to send Brad Boimler, a Starfleet ensign pulled through the portal from the year 2381, back to his time. Convinced by Boimler to engage in diplomacy, Enterprise captain Christopher Pike made a trade with Caras, giving a cargo of tritriticale grain intended for the colony on Setlik II in exchange for returning the portal.
Boimler soon realized that without the grain, the Setlik colonists would have to relocate, and secretly sent a message to Caras to reverse the exchange. Having been joined at this point by his friend Beckett Mariner, Boimler convinced Caras that he came from a future where it was considered offensive to look at all Orions as pirates; he knew that Astrea Tendi, the great-grandmother of his friend and shipmate D'Vana Tendi, was a member of Caras' crew. Pike asked only to use the portal to send the future officers back to their own time, and as far as history was concerned, Orion scientists would be given credit for the portal's discovery. Caras agreed, saying that it was all he ever wanted. (SNW: "Those Old Scientists")
Caras was portrayed by Greg Bryk.
