A hatch, also known as an access hatch, access panel, access plate or trapdoor, was a type of access point used to enter or exit one area to another, in many cases for maintenance purposes. It could be opened manually or by remote.

After Shuttlepod 1 crashed through the surface on Terra Nova and landed several meters below in a cave, the Novan Jamin requested that the door to be opened. But Captain Archer first asked Trip Tucker what could happen if he opened the port hatch of the shuttlepod. Tucker told him that it would be okay so Archer opened the hatch. (ENT: "Terra Nova")

In August of 2151, the main hatch of the Earth Cargo Service freighter ECS Fortunate was damaged so the landing party from Enterprise NX-01 had to use the auxiliary hatch of the ship. (ENT: "Fortunate Son")

In 2286, after the HMS Bounty crashed in the San Francisco Bay following a successful time warp from 1986, the ship began sinking, and Admiral Kirk had to stay behind to save George and Gracie, who were trapped in an aquarium. He ordered the rest of the crew to abandon ship, and he further ordered them to "close the hatch." (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

In 2369, the hatch of the runabout USS Ganges had to be powered up with a EPI capacitor before it could be opened. (DS9: "Q-Less")

In 2375, Tom Paris cautioned Kathryn Janeway to beware the tricks of villains from The Adventures of Captain Proton, which included trapdoors and secret weapons. (VOY: "Bride of Chaotica!")
