Hekaras II was the inhabited second planet in its star system, in the Hekaras sector. Located near the Hekaras Corridor, it was the only inhabited planet in its region. It was, as well, the homeworld of the Hekarans, a member of the United Federation of Planets. The planet was governed by the Hekaran government.
In the 2360s, the planet underwent major climate changes due to gravitational shifts in the system and in danger of becoming uninhabitable. Hekaran scientists Serova and Rabal concluded that warp travel through the Corridor was the cause. In 2370, Dr. Serova sacrificed herself to prove her theory, by breaching her ship's warp core and creating a large subspace rift, 0.1 light years in diameter. With this news, the Federation ordered a weather control matrix installed on the planet to forestall the existing effects of the Corridor's instability. The Federation Council also issued a directive restricting essential travel only to Hekaras II. (TNG: "Force of Nature")
The Star Trek Encyclopedia, 4th ed., vol. 1, p. 333 classified Hekaras II as a class M planet.
