Hemming was the act of shortening the end of a length of clothing.

In 2371, former spy Elim Garak found the action of subduing Michael Eddington refreshing after years of hemming dresses. (DS9: "The Search, Part II")

Later that year, upon hearing Benjamin Sisko's admiration for the words he used to convince Gul Benil to stand down, Garak claimed it was something he heard while hemming trousers. (DS9: "Second Skin")

He later explained his lack of interest in eating much by saying, "Hemming women's dresses may provide me with a modest income, but it offers very little in the way of exercise." (DS9: "Distant Voices")

When trying to lure Garak back to espionage, Enabran Tain asked him if he wanted to go back to his shop and hem pants, or return to his former position. (DS9: "Improbable Cause")

In 2372, Dukat remarked that as a result of the fall of the Obsidian Order, Garak would be hemming women's dresses for the rest of his life. Later, Julian Bashir expressed pity for the tailor, saying Garak would be hemming trousers in his tailor shop while Dukat took the credit due him for saving the Cardassian government. (DS9: "The Way of the Warrior")

In 2375, after declining to decode any more transmissions for Starfleet Intelligence for a while, Garak excused himself to hem some pants. (DS9: "Afterimage")
