Herman Melville was a Human author who wrote the classic novel Moby-Dick. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)

The line, "All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by," from John Masefield's Sea-Fever, were briefly attributed erroneously to Melville by Leonard McCoy, but this was subsequently corrected by Spock. (Star Trek V: The Final Frontier)

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (3rd ed., p. 306), the birth and death years of Mr. Melville were 1819 and 1891, respectively.
