A Hirogen ship or Hirogen vessel was a type of small, heavily-armed hunting vessel used by Hirogen hunters during the 2370s as they hunted prey throughout the Delta Quadrant.

History[]

The USS Voyager first encountered a Hirogen ship in mid-2374, when they accessed the Hirogen communications network to receive the full message from Starfleet Command. Tuvok and Seven of Nine were hunted down and held as prisoners aboard this ship until Idrin told his Beta-Hirogen to kill their prey. (VOY: "Hunters")

Technical data[]

These vessels could be easily identified by their monotanium hull plating, tylium-based power source, and dicyclic warp signature.

Their hull armor, alone, made them virtually impervious to phaser fire. They were also capable of achieving high warp; easily capable of traveling a half light year in four hours. (VOY: "Prey")

They were described as having "massive weapons", including phaser banks. (VOY: "Hunters", "Prey", "Flesh and Blood")

Their weapons range of at least 50,000 kilometers. Among their tactical abilities was that of being able to disable other vessels with a type of subnucleonic beam, as well as a type of stun beam. (VOY: "Hunters")

These ships generally traveled alone or in small groups, and would occasionally join forces with several others in a multi-pronged attack. (VOY: "Prey")

Several of these ships together were able to defeat an Intrepid-class starship. (VOY: "Hunters", "Prey", "The Killing Game")

Interior design[]

Bridge[]

The interior of this vessel

This class of vessel was usually piloted by two Hunters, an Alpha-Hirogen and a Beta-Hirogen.

The bridge had large freestanding console that could be manipulated with control rods. (VOY: "Hunters", "Prey")

Trophy room[]

Console in trophy room

Beyond the bridge was a large room with another console. The walls contain trophies and bladed weapons. Also included in this area was technology for producing relics of their prey, including a harness-like construction to hang their prey on while preparing an osteotomy, and large transparent cylinders with fluid in which an enzyme could break down their prey's tissue. (VOY: "Hunters", "Prey")

The script from "Hunters" described the room as "[a] dark, cluttered space knifed with stark pools of light. Strange weapons hang on one wall, and various lethal-looking artifacts -- knives, tools, etc. -- are suspended from the ceiling." Later it describes Tuvok's point of view, stating, "[h]e sees he's in the dark, claustrophobic, cluttered room of the Hirogen. He eyes the wall of weaponry, the strange and unidentifiable artifacts and tools hanging from the ceiling."

Ships of the class[]

  • Unnamed Hirogen ships
    • Idrin's ship

Background information[]

According to the script for "Hunters", this vessel was "[a] mean-looking ship, bristling with weaponry."

For more information on this studio model, see VOY studio models.

Apocrypha[]

In Star Trek Online, these vessels are identified as "Hunter Escorts".

Diagram callouts in Star Trek: The Magazine suggest the ship had escape pods and a shuttlebay, though these weren't referenced on screen. (Star Trek: The Magazine Volume 1, Issue 6, p. 78)
