Chakotay (Captain)

An image of Chakotay from a holo-recording

A holo-recording was a holographic program created by recording three-dimensional objects in motion. It was intended for playback with holographic projectors, a holodeck or holosuite.

Holo-recordings could be created to some degree from two-dimensional recordings, with the largest gaps being areas outside the line of sight of the recorder. (TNG: "Identity Crisis")

In 2376, Kes time traveled back to 2371 and nearly gave the USS Voyager and its crew to the Vidiians. To prevent Kes from time traveling a second time, Captain Kathryn Janeway had Kes make a holo-recording, which was replayed to Kes five years later in Voyager's engine room, telling her to cease her malevolent ways. (VOY: "Fury")

In 2374, Elim Garak created a forged holographic recording of a planned Dominion invasion of Romulan space on behalf of Benjamin Sisko in order to convince Romulan Senator Vreenak to join the Dominion War. Though Vreenak understood it was a forgery, his assassination by Garak allowed the recording to successfully dupe the Romulan Star Empire into entering the war against the Dominion.
