French horn

A horn being played on the Enterprise-D

For the body part, please see horn (anatomy).

The horn, sometimes referred to as the French horn, was a musical instrument from the planet Earth and a member of the brass family.

A song from the ancient Greek comedy The Frogs referenced Pan's horn, which he sounded for "marking time to the rhyme with his hoof." (TOS: "Plato's Stepchildren")

A crewmember of the USS Enterprise-D played the horn in a concert held in Ten Forward in the year 2367 The concert also featured Data, Jenna D'Sora and Keiko O'Brien. (TNG: "In Theory")

Background information

The horn is a favorite instrument of film composers and commonly used for presenting heroic and heralding themes. Alexander Courage used the horn for the opening fanfare call in the original Star Trek opening credits, and this horn call was later used by Jerry Goldsmith for the main theme of Star Trek: The Motion Picture that was subsequently used for Star Trek: The Next Generation. The instrument was also prominently used in the main themes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.
