The Hypatia was a Federation Type 6 shuttlecraft that was in service with Starfleet in the mid-24th century, attached to the USS Enterprise-D. It was shuttle number 03, replacing the shuttlecraft Curie lost in 2370.
In that year, this shuttle was taken by Picard and Data to retrieve a lost photon torpedo. (TNG: "Genesis")
The Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, 2nd ed., p. 289 noted that the shuttlecraft was named after the philosopher and mathematician Hypatia.
Until recently, it was not known if the shuttle model or the full-size mock-up were repainted for the episode. Photos of the shuttlebay set, credit to Eric Alba, show that the full-size mock-up was renamed with the registry being carried over from its last use as the Curie. [1] [2]
