Hyperfield

Exterior of the hyperfield

The hyperfield was a megastructure created and inhabited by Species 10-C. It was located outside the Milky Way Galaxy, two light years from their original homeworld and some thirty light years from the galactic barrier and the home region of the Stilph civilization. (DIS: "All In", "The Galactic Barrier")

History[]

After determining the origin point of the Dark Matter Anomaly in 3190, the USS Discovery crew deduced the presence of the hyperfield from Stilph stellar surveys of the area. Starfleet subsequently dispatched Discovery to the hyperfield to make first contact. It was hypothesized that Unknown Species 10-C constructed the hyperfield in the late 22nd century, shortly after their homeworld was rendered uninhabitable by a series of massive asteroid impacts. Hyperfield engulfs USS Discovery

Discovery being engulfed by the hyperfield

Discovery garnered the attention of Species 10-C by deploying DOT-23s to apply complex hydrocarbon compounds collected from the former Species 10-C homeworld to the surface of the hyperfield. Species 10-C proceeded to bring Discovery, along with Booker's ship that was hiding under cloak on its hull, into the hyperfield within an orb. While the Discovery personnel attempted to communicate with Species 10-C, Booker's ship broke out of the orb with the assistance of United Earth General Diatta Ndoye.

From Booker's ship, Doctor Ruon Tarka attempted to take the hyperfield power source with a gravimetric beam. He refused to relent even after being informed that the collapse of the hyperfield would destroy everything inside it along with Earth and Ni'Var, and locked the controls. With no other options, a remorseful Ndoye rammed a Discovery shuttle into Booker's ship, causing its destruction. In subsequent negotiations, Species 10-C were convinced to stop using the DMA to mine energy, and consequently dismantled the hyperfield. (DIS: "Species Ten-C", "Coming Home")

Technical data[]

The hyperfield was a flattened spheroid with a radius of 228 million kilometers or 1.58 astronomical units, and a gravitational presence of 1.3 solar units, sufficient to affect the orbits of nearby extragalactic stars. The hyperfield enclosed a small star system consisting of a single star with Dyson rings and three gas giants, all identical in mass and chemical composition.

Built as a means of protection by Species 10-C, the hyperfield instantly vaporized any object that came into contact with it. It functioned like a Faraday cage, blocking sensor readings of its interior. It did not emit broad-spectrum black body radiation, like a natural celestial object would, nor any detectable communication signals. At ranges closer than 1,000 meters, its surface radiation caused a small but statistically significant power drain on spacecraft. The hyperfield could rapidly deform locally to enclose foreign objects in orbs and bring them into the interior.

Hyperfield power source

Hyperfield power source

The structure required a colossal amount of energy to maintain, which was provided by boronite extracted by the DMA. Its power source was located in a casement of silicon-ellanium alloy on the edge of the hyperfield; if the power source was removed, the hyperfield would implode within three minutes and destroy everything contained inside. Close to the power source, there were plasma streams and gravimetric flux that prevented the use of orbs and auto-navigation. (DIS: "All In", "Species Ten-C", "Coming Home")
