In geometry, the hypotenuse was the longest side of a triangle, the side opposite the right angle. The square of the hypotenuse can be determined through the Pythagorean theorem.

In 2364, William T. Riker tricked Lore into revealing his intelligence was greater than he'd initially led others to believe, by making a statement regarding this principle, which Lore nearly completed correctly before catching himself.

When Data informed Lore of his blunder, the android admitted he'd underestimated Riker's intelligence and vowed to be more careful the next time. (TNG: "Datalore")
