Ihat was one of many of the D'Arsay personalities to "possess" Lieutenant Commander Data in 2370.

He was the most animated and energetic of the personas Data depicted, displaying a boisterous and smug personality and referring to himself as 'charming'. He spoke often to Picard, often even mocking or trying to irritate him. However, his smugness and scorn was sometimes lost in moments of fear.

Ihat claimed to have escaped Masaka in the past, suggesting that he was an intended sacrifice who got away. He was the first to reveal the sign for Masaka's temple to Captain Jean-Luc Picard, under the promise that if she found out Picard would take his place as a sacrifice. Masaka interrupted by killing him. Like the other D'Arsay personalities, Ihat seemed not to be afraid of Korgano, reinforcing Picard's belief that Korgano was seen as a protector as opposed to a destroyer. Ihat was also the first to mention Korgano, claiming that only Korgano can keep Masaka asleep. (TNG: "Masks")

In the first draft script he was called "Iha".

Ihat was named by writer Joe Menosky after musician James Iha of the band The Smashing Pumpkins. Menosky explained that they were one of his favorite bands at the time of writing the episode. (Star Trek: The Next Generation 365, p. 341)
