According to the shooting script for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the integrator was an engineering component of the refitted USS Enterprise. When the Federation starship was struck by a plasma energy bolt fired by V'ger, the ship's engineering systems were overloaded. Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott ordered that the main power system be bypassed with his team alternating integrators.
