An intimate relationship was a relationship between individuals that involved physical or emotional intimacy, and may or may not have been sexual in nature. Physical intimacy involved being near or touching another being, and was a way to express feelings such as friendship, love (platonic or romantic), or sexual attraction.
In 2368, William T. Riker noted to a J'naii named Soren that for Humans, the sexual act brought a closeness and intimacy as it could be a very pleasurable experience. (TNG: "The Outcast")
In 2401, Agnes Jurati recalled that her longest lasting intimate relationship, including one that she had just ended, was less than a year.
