Investigator was a position, usually in a police force. An investigator was responsible for solving crimes and uncovering various mysteries. (TNG: "A Matter of Perspective"; VOY: "Ex Post Facto", "Riddles"; ENT: "The Forge")

In 2267, Mister Hengist assured James T. Kirk that if the murder he was tasked with solving had happened on Rigel IV, his homeworld, rather than Argelius II, he would have had a dozen investigators at his disposal. (TOS: "Wolf in the Fold")
