Real world article
(written from a Production point of view)

James L. Conway (born 27 October 1950; age 73) is a New York-born director of many Star Trek episodes for four television series, starting with Star Trek: The Next Generation. Conway is, in addition, a fan of the original Star Trek series. He was chosen to direct his first TNG episode, "Justice", soon after he completed an episode of MacGyver. During his career, Conway directed everything from Sunn Classics' pseudo-documentaries to Westerns, horrors and industrial films. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion (1st ed., p. 40)) Conway was interviewed by Patrick Jankiewicz for the article "James L. Conway – Arbiter of Justice", published in The Official Star Trek: The Next Generation Magazine issue 19, pp. 48-52.

Conway was one of Ira Steven Behr's favorite directors on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, due to Conway directing "Duet", "Necessary Evil", "The Way of the Warrior" and "Little Green Men". In 1996, Conway agreed to direct "Apocalypse Rising", despite the fact that he was starting a new job working for Aaron Spelling. Conway commented, "['Apocalypse Rising'] was a terrific script and I was honored to be able to do it. I'd just been hired as Executive Vice President of Spelling Productions, and Ira and Rick Berman begged me to hold off going over there long enough to do the episode. I loved the script so much I talked to the people at Spelling and they agreed to let me report later." (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion (p. 367))

During a 2012 interview with the official Star Trek website, Conway stated he had been in the running, alongside Jonathan Frakes, to direct Star Trek: First Contact. He almost got the job to direct, but Patrick Stewart chose Frakes over Conway. [1]
