Jimmy was a Human who lived in Harlem, New York, during the 1950s. Jimmy was a petty criminal and friend of Benny Russell who, despite himself, was encouraged by Benny's story about a black captain of a futuristic space station.
When Russell's story was refused for publication, Jimmy derided him for wasting his time. Russell countered that Jimmy should be looking for ways to make something of himself instead of living the stereotype of a criminal that was commonplace amid the racism of the time.
Jimmy was ultimately killed by Burt Ryan and Kevin Mulkahey, during a criminal deal gone wrong. At the time of Jimmy's shooting, Russell tried to help him but was forcibly restrained by Ryan and Mulkahey, receiving a severe beating in the process. (DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars")
Jimmy was played by actor Cirroc Lofton. He appreciated that the part gave him an opportunity to play a different Star Trek role from his usual character of Jake Sisko. "I loved that character," Lofton enthused. "That was one of my favorites […] I got to be sort of a player, hustler, street kid […] It felt great. He was so pivotal in the overall importance and the meaning of the show […] He was a big part of that [episode's] message." (Cinefantastique, Vol. 30, No. 9/10, p. 71)
