John D. Gowans (born 23 December 1943; age 76) is an actor who appeared as the transporter assistant to Rand in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

His costume was sold off on the It's A Wrap! sale and auction on eBay. [1]

Gowans has appeared on-screen since the early '70s. He made guest appearances in the television series The Corner Bar (1972, episode Politics, with Vincent Schiavelli), The Rockford Files (1976, episode So Help Me God, with Jason Wingreen, Dick Durock, and Chuck Hicks), The Incredible Hulk (1979, episode Babalao, with Louise Sorel), Dallas (1983, episode The Sting, with Susan Howard, John Beck, Henry Darrow, and Morgan Woodward), Hill Street Blues (1985, episode Washington Deceased, with regulars James B. Sikking and Barbara Bosson), The Twilight Zone (1985, episode If She Dies, with Nan Martin), Dynasty (1989, episode Blasts from the Past, with Joan Collins, Stephanie Beacham, Tracy Scoggins, and Spike Silver), Murder She Wrote (1993, episode Final Curtain, with Dennis Christopher, Keene Curtis, and William Windom), The Practice (1998, episode State of Mind, with David Bowe and Dan Desmond, and directed by Adam Nimoy), 7th Heaven (2001, episode Chances..., with Catherine Hicks and Star Trek: The Motion Picture co-star Stephen Collins), and Numb3rs (2006, episode Harvest).

Gowans has also performed in several feature films, including the academy award winning You Light Up My Life (1977), the television movie Fantasies (1982, with Madlyn Rhue and Karen Austin), the drama Leap of Faith (1988, with Louis Giambalvo and Aaron Lustig), The Heroes of Desert Storm (1991, with Michael Champion, Ben Lemon, Glenn Morshower, and Tim Russ), and the drama Dreamrider (1993, with Leigh Taylor-Young).
