On stardate 1312, Captain James T. Kirk accidentally called a yeoman named Smith (another common human family name) as Yeoman Jones. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before")

In a trial on stardate 2947, JAG prosecutor Areel Shaw used a hypothetical situation between two characters named Smith and Jones to illustrate a possible psychological interaction between Kirk and Ben Finney. (TOS: "Court Martial")
