K/O Paper Products is a television and movie production company founded by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci around 2009. The name reflects the partnership's origins as script writers with the company being the formal confirmation of the friendship and writing partnership both founders had enjoyed since 1990. The company co-produced Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond. The company is located in Beverly Hills, California and has been operating worldwide.
Beside producing television projects such as Fringe, Hawaii Five-0 (2010-2015), Transformers Prime (2010-2013, with the voices of Jeffrey Combs, Frank Welker, Tania Gunadi, and Kevin Michael Richardson), Sleepy Hollow (2013-2015, with recurring guest stars John Cho and Clancy Brown), Scorpion (2014), and Matador (2014), the company also worked on Cowboys & Aliens (2011, production design by Scott Chambliss and set decoration by Karen Manthey), People Like Us (2012, starring Chris Pine), Now You See Me (2013, music by Brian Tyler), Ender's Game (2013), the television drama Identity (2014), and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014, co-produced by Stan Lee and cinematography by Dan Mindel).
Virtually joined at the hip for over two decades and once considered one of Hollywood's most successful production duos, the Kurtzman/Orci partnership started to dissolve from 2014 onward for otherwise undisclosed reasons, though Kurtzman later went on record, stating,"We grew in different directions. The kinds of stories we wanted to tell changed. We have such deep love and respect for each other that neither of us wanted to pull in the wrong direction." [1] On 22 April 2014 it was announced that the two men would no longer collaborate on feature film productions, and the split necessitated a reorganization of the company to reflect the changes, with the withdrawal of Orci. [2][3] The breakup necessitated Kurtzman to incorporate his own individual production company in August 2014, Secret Hideout, with several K/O staffers switching over.
More recently, the company produced The Mummy (2016) directed by Kurtzman. Later projects included two The Amazing Spider-Man sequels, Van Helsing, and Locke & Key.
